Detoxification is an essential process followed at an addiction treatment center before the actual treatment begins. Detox removes the toxins inside the body of addicts. The toxins from the alcohol and drugs can become detrimental for the health of the addicts even after they stop the consumption. It is necessary to go through the detox process to cleanse the entire body and avoid any severe health problem in the future. Detox helps the addict in bringing back a healthy body for a brand new life.

Alcohol and drugs, addictive components, do not metabolize and therefore they get piled up inside the body as toxins. These toxins affect kidney, liver and digestive organs of the body. Detox is either done on the whole body or on specific parts, such as colon or kidney. The detox process is helpful in the removal of toxicants from the body of the addict that has been accumulated because of alcohol or drug abuse.

At times, if the addictive substances are not removed from the bodies of the addicts, they might have a craving of wanting the amassed substance inside of their bodies. These substances if left unattended could prove harmful to the addict in the near future. The patients may have to suffer severe health consequences. At times, some addicts do not go through any treatment in an addiction treatment center. If the detoxification is not performed on them, they might never be able to get rid of their addiction forever. A proper Detox treatment ensures that the addict can now be free of his addiction mentally and physically.

While other treatment programs take care of the getting the addict over with his addiction, the detox program helps the addict in getting over the already accumulated substance inside his body because of severe alcohol or drug abuse. The detoxification process forms a significant prospect of addiction treatment programs. It speeds up the recovery of the patient. The patient is kept away from any kind of addiction during the Detox treatment. The addicts are put on medication to ensure that their bodies and minds do not get tempted towards consuming alcohol or taking in drugs.

During the addiction treatment, patients often show symptoms of withdrawal, as they are tempted towards going back to their addiction. If a patient is a severe addict, the temptation of going back would be severe too. Medications help in overcoming these withdrawal symptoms and help their bodies to go back to normal life without any cravings for addictive substances. The process and duration of the detoxification can vary depending on the severity of the patients.

Generally, the duration of the process of Detox is of three days and can go up to as much as three weeks. The length of the Detox process depends on the age of the addicts, the severeness or level of their addiction and the amount of time for which the addicts have been in alcohol or drug abuse. The Detox program helps the bodies of the addicts get back to normal.
